Personal Development
At Westgate Hill Primary Academy, we are deeply committed to nurturing the personal development and well-being of every pupil. We recognise the diverse and dynamic nature of our school community, with many pupils joining us from varied backgrounds and with differing needs, including a high proportion of pupils with English as an additional language and those who are disadvantaged. Our inclusive ethos ensures that all pupils feel safe, valued, and supported to develop confidence, resilience, and independence. Through a carefully planned personal, social, health, and economic education (PSHE) curriculum, alongside wider opportunities, we equip pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive both in school and beyond.
Our personal development programme is designed to foster pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural growth, helping them to understand and appreciate the rich diversity of our community and the wider world. Pupils engage in meaningful discussions about respect, equality, and the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual tolerance. We provide age-appropriate education on healthy relationships, online safety, and emotional well-being, ensuring pupils are well-prepared to navigate the challenges of modern life with integrity and empathy.
We take a proactive approach to identifying and supporting pupils who may face additional barriers to their learning or well-being, including those with special educational needs, those known to social care, and those experiencing vulnerability. Our pastoral care systems are robust and responsive, ensuring that every child receives the tailored support they need to flourish. We also provide pupils with opportunities to explore their identity, heritage, and talents through creative arts, sports, and community activities, fostering a strong sense of belonging and purpose. At Westgate Hill, we are dedicated to preparing our pupils to be responsible, respectful, and active citizens who contribute positively to society.
As part of our offer, we have an extensive range of enrichment opportunities for all our pupils. These give pupils the chance to achieve, meet new people, try new activities and support their academic progress.
Our school clubs range from ballet to gardening and from Shakespeare to basketball. We have even introduced clubs that parents are invited to attend as well! We strive to provide an ever-changing range of clubs so that all pupils have an opportunity to attend a club that interests them – and we are always looking for new ideas. Some of the clubs we offer are:
- Reading
- Mindfulness
- Basketball
- Fencing
- Orienteering
- Art
- Choir
- Violin
- Guitar

The personal development of our pupils is at the forefront of our thinking, and we provide an extensive range of personal development opportunities including residential trips, day trips and visitors to the school. This not only supports the curriculum, but helps develop pupils’ talents and interests.
"One pupil summed up the views of many by saying, ‘I want to go to school every day. We would be happy to come at the weekend too’."
