Pupil Parliament

Pupil Parliament

‘every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously’

Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)

At Westgate Hill, we have a Pupil Parliament that represents the views of the children in our school. Every child in KS1 and KS2 contributes to our Pupil Parliament. This comprises of the ‘House of Commons’, who are voted for by their classmates to act on their behalf. Each member of the Pupil Parliament has their own role to fulfil, we call them ‘ministers’. We also have the ‘House of Lords’ who are the previous year’s Pupil Parliament. Their job is to guide and support the current ministers and act as ‘experts’.

Our Pupil Parliament plays a huge role in our School, holding weekly ‘surgeries’ in order to gather thoughts and opinions from their peers. They share that information in their Pupil Parliament meetings and come to a conclusion about how to act.

This year’s Pupil Parliament are:

Year 1- Hamza, Hayaa-Fatimah and Arham

Year 2- Humaidan, Grace, Mohammed Ali and Amy

Year 3- Sara, Roz, Zenia and Basil

Year 4- Wali, Adyan, Abdulrahman and Jannah

Year 5- Jakov, Bozhin, Mehreen and Darin

Year 6- Maryam, Antonia, Mehmed and Aka

Our Pupil Parliament children visit London each year to see democracy in action! Children take part in an engaging workshop in the Education Centre and are then given an unforgettable tour of the iconic Palace of Westminster. They are able to visit the House of Commons and the House of Lords and learn how Parliament works inside the amazing building where its business takes place.  Children come away from their visit with a deeper understanding of democracy, governance and the political system. When we visited in 2024, children took part in a workshop in which they had to debate whether school uniform should be compulsory. The children then came up with laws of their own, which included banning homework, making healthcare more achievable for people in need and making chocolate free for everyone!
