Skillsbuilder

At Westgate Hill Primary Academy we are passionate about supporting the emotional wellbeing and academic success of our children to prepare them for life beyond school. One of the ways we do this is to use the Skills Builder Universal Framework. The Framework is the world’s leading tool for measuring and building essential skills. It was developed with the support of leading businesses, academics and educators and the framework builds on the eight skills that have been identified as essential by employers, schools and within social organisations throughout the world.

We have embedded the Skills Builder Framework in our classroom in the following ways:

  • Through lessons – teachers share the Skills Builder icons in relevant lessons and clearly explain links between lessons and skills.

  • A monthly Skills Focus – children are given detailed information on how to work towards improving a particular skill each month.

  • Through extra-curricular clubs - Pupils have opportunities to further practice and master these skills in other subjects, after school clubs, off-timetable days – trips, careers day and whole school projects.

  • Rewards and recognition – The essential skills will be referenced in school reports, pupil’s progress is celebrated in assemblies through Headteacher’s certificates and Skills Builder stickers are given to reward a good use of skills across the curriculum.

  • Career links – teachers make clear links to aspirational career options based on the curriculum content. The Skills Builder Hub is an excellent place for teachers to encourage children to explore different career opportunities.
