BackPhysical Education
At Westgate Hill, our goal is to deliver a high-quality physical education program for all students within our school. We aim to provide each child with the opportunity to take part in a variety of engaging activities based on vital skills. We will prepare our children with the skills, knowledge, and confidence that will enable them to become lifelong, physically active individuals. We want our children to understand the importance of having a healthy, balanced diet and the effect it has on health and well-being. We will strive to ensure we build lifelong skills such as resilience, leadership, teamwork, kindness, and respect that will inspire and support our children to succeed. We also implement skills builder within our curriculum to prepare our children for future challenges.
Curriculum Overview
We have carefully planned a curriculum to ensure our students get a wide breadth of physical activity. In Reception, students engage in fundamental movement skills, gymnastics, and athletics. Year 1 builds on these skills with FUNS, gymnastics, invasion games, dance, athletics, and net and wall activities. Year 2 continues this progression with invasion games, gymnastics, FUNS, dance, athletics, and striking and fielding. Year 3 develops dance, FUNS, striking and fielding, gymnastics, athletics, net and wall (tennis), and ballet. In Year 4, students participate in swimming, dance, cricket, FUNS, gymnastics, athletics, and football. Year 5 offers a diverse program, hockey, gymnastics, basketball, FUNS, OAA, net and wall (tennis), and athletics.
External Coaching and Partnerships
We are working with several coaches and outside agencies to enhance our P.E. provision. These include:

Swimming
Each year group has a specific block of external coaching to support skill development and engagement in various sports.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In EYFS, children are given time and space to enjoy energetic play daily in the outdoor learning areas. They also access specific physical development through timetabled PE lessons in Reception, where they learn and practice fundamental movement skills. Teachers carefully plan opportunities to develop children’s fine and gross motor skills through provision inside and outside.
Key Stage 1 (KS1)
In KS1, children develop their fundamental movement skills through a range of activities and opportunities, working individually, in pairs, or in groups. Key aspects covered include gymnastics, dance, games, and athletics. We follow the National Curriculum for P.E. in Key Stage 1. By the end of KS1, children are expected to:
Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing, and catching.
Develop balance, agility, and coordination.
Apply these skills in a range of activities.
Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
Perform dances using simple movement patterns.
Key Stage 2 (KS2)
In KS2, we continue to follow the National Curriculum for P.E., allowing children to develop and apply a range of skills in various ways, linking actions and sequences of movements. They continue to refine individual skills and learn cooperation through team games. The curriculum includes:
A focus on choices and tactics within games.
A variety of sports and activities such as basketball, tennis, athletics, skipping, and games skills.
Swimming instruction to ensure all children develop water safety skills.
Our comprehensive programme at Westgate Hill ensures every child has the opportunity to build their physical abilities, teamwork, and resilience while fostering a lifelong passion for an active and healthy lifestyle.
